BHS Highland (North) has booked Sue Gould-Wright, Equestrian Pilates instructor from Hexham to do a two day clinic on March 27-28. She plans to run introductory sessions around two hours long both mornings - Halkirk Youth Club has been booked for this. In the afternoon she would do ridden sessions, probably taking two riders at a time. This will be carried out at the North Highland College, Achavrole.

At present I can state that the morning floor sessions will not cost more than £30, with class sizes restricted to 12. The ridden sessions will be no more than £20.

Sue will be flying up from Newcastle to Wick, arriving Friday evening and heading back Monday morning.

the clinic would be open to everyone, including non riders if spaces allow. Oviously the more interested the easier it will be for me to keep costs at a minimum.

Those interested should contact me and leave a message on my answering machine - 01955 603270, or mobile 07713404333, or email jean.gunn@yahoo.co.uk

EVENTING CLINIC WITH TOP INSTRUCTOR 29TH AND 30TH MAY 2010

A FEW PLACES STILL AVAILABLE

NEFRC is pleased to offer a weekend’s instruction from one of the UK’s top instructors – Tessa Martin-Bird FBHS. This will be a 2 day clinic with show jumping and flatwork on the Saturday (29th May) at Pratis, and XC on the Sunday (30th) at Montrave (both venues near Leven, Fife).  The facilities at Pratis are excellent and riders will be in groups of no more than 4 persons.  Riders will also be able to use the small Pratis XC course after/before your lessons on Saturday. There will be an opportunity to have a stable overnight at Pratis and a bed if anyone wants to turn it into a party and stay over (both extra cost but not much!)  On Sunday rider will move across the road for 1 ½ hour XC training at Montrave – again in groups of no more than 4.  Montrave is a challenging and very interesting XC course with hills and water and a wide variety of jumps with heights from 70cm – 90cm.

Our visiting coach, Tessa Martin-Bird FBHS is one of the UK’s top equestrian coaches.  Her CV goes on for ever but briefly - she is a BHS Fellow, chief BHS examiner and a BD judge.  She has competed successfully nationally (eg Badminton Burghley etc) and internationally and produced many horses from Novice to International level. Latterly she has been competing very successfully in pure dressage and has produced horses to Advanced level.  She has trained with Herr Arthur Kottas, chief rider of the Spanish School of Vienna, Ferdi Eilberg and recently with Kyra Kyrklund and her husband.  For all you Blue Peter fans you might remember Rags and Jet – she trained them so perhaps you’ve seen her on the telly!

This wonderful opportunity is open to all levels of competitor and is being subsidised by NEFRC to make it affordable to all.  The cost of the 2 day clinic costs only £100 per rider.  Tessa is really looking forward to her ‘one off’ trip north and spaces are limited – names will be taken on a first come first served basis.

If you wish to book a space please send a cheque for £50 deposit made payable to NEFRC to:

Grizelda Cowan, The Garden House, Easter Grange, Earlsferry, Fife KY9 1AN.      For more information email grizelda@eastergrange.co.uk  or call 07711 395136.

bulletNOTE FROM BHS SCOTLAND

Hello everyone

I wanted to let you know about a number of eventing events that BHS Scotland has coming up over the coming months which might be of interest to your Riding Club members.  Further information about each event is attached and I'd be grateful if you could circulate details to your members.

23 February: Indoors Cross Country with Eric Smiley at SNEC
Join Olympian Eric as he shares hints, tips and new ideas on how to prepare for the coming season without leaving the arena.  He'll be covering everything from the basics (rider's position and horse's way of going) through to what he calls "the honesty card" - jumping skinnies, bounces and corners.  Everyone welcome.

Three horses have been destroyed after a diagnosis of atypical myoglobinuria was reached by Kessock Equine Vets this autumn and early winter.  The signs include stiffness, depression with a low-head carriage, a high heart rate and a high breathing rate.  Very dark brown urine is produced and the animals eventually collapse and can't get back up onto their feet.  There has been an outbreak of this disease throughout Western Europe and over 200 horses have died.  The disease mainly affects young stock, grazing permanent pasture with close proximity to water courses, such as lochs and rivers.  A link has been suggested with pastures which have lots of deciduous trees and hence leaves on the ground.  Prevention advice is limited to providing shelter and supplementary feeds when the weather is damp or wet.  Providing stabling for part of the day, also helps reduce the risk.  We have placed a notification on our web site at www.kessockequinevets.co.uk and more detailed information can be found at www.myopathieatypique.be.

Suffice to say, that this is a very serious disease and early treatment is essential for any hope of success.  If owners notice stiffness in a horse or pony that looks under-the-weather, they should contact their vet immediately.

His owner is desperate to find him - can you help? He is thought to be travelling with a small pony.

Thank you
 Police Incident Number: 511

We have a horse (Muphasa) who has been stolen whilst on loan, and his
owner Louize is desperate to find him. The woman who has taken him,
is moving him from yard to yard, and we know he was in Perth for a
short time, then thought to be headed to Dundee. I spoke with Louize
today and she thinks she has seen him advertised for sale (no picture
shown) in Cupar. So please, please can you email his details to
everyone you know, and tell friends and advise yard owners. The woman

has left unpaid yard fees all over the area
(bouncing cheques) and has reportedly stolen tack from one stable.
If Muphasa is in a yard in your area, please rest assured that Louize
is happy to pay his livery costs until she can collect him, please
don't let him be evicted and taken away. She just wants him safe.

Please do what you can.

In collaboration with British Riding Clubs, British Dressage is launching a
new membership category, the Riding Club British Dressage membership. From
October this year, any member of a British Riding Clubs affiliated Riding
Club can enjoy six months of affiliated winter dressage competition with
the added advantage of full British Dressage membership.

For the special price of just £30 for membership and £30 for horse
registration, Riding Club members can compete between 1st October and 31st
March with all the benefits of British Dressage membership. They will have
the opportunity to qualify for regional and combined training championships
and those wishing to compete at Preliminary level only, needn’t even
register their horse.

This package, which is exclusive to BRC members, will provide Riding Club
members with access to affiliated competitions where they can be assured of
great facilities and the right environment to fine tune their dressage
before the summer. Other benefits include access to training at all levels,
copies of British Dressage magazine, access to the members’ areas of the BD
website and the monthly email newsletter.

Stoneleigh Riding Club member Lucy Bell is also a member of British
Dressage and frequently takes the opportunity to compete in affiliated
dressage. Lucy is an active Riding Club member, regularly competing in show
jumping, eventing and dressage with her club. She explains that getting out
to affiliated dressage is a vital part of her horse’s education and really
complements the other disciplines.

Lucy says: “I joined [British Dressage] initially to improve my dressage
with a particular horse at the time. That was four years ago and I’ve been
a member ever since. I find it really keeps me motivated through the winter
and regular feedback from the judges is a huge help. It gives me goals to
aim for rather than just schooling at home.”

Talking about the initiative, Sarah Phillips Senior Executive of British
Riding Clubs says: “This is really a great opportunity for our members to
benefit from British Dressage membership without having to pay a full year
subscription, and in this current financial crisis, every penny helps. This
collaboration is just one more reason why all riders should become members
of British Riding Clubs.”

British Dressage Chief Executive Amanda Bond says: “We are just delighted
that our ever-strengthening relationship with British Riding Clubs has
resulted in this new joint venture. It is great that we can assist then in
offering yet more benefit to their members. I am sure it will be extremely
popular – just as it proved to be with British Eventing.”
